The Eternal Presence and the Torment of Negligent Breaths in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Poem 70)
In Poem 70 of the Mokhtar Nameh, Attar of Nishapur explores the profound mystical theme of continuous Divine remembrance and the severe spiritual consequence of negligence (ghaflah).
The Secret and Eternal Presence
Attar states that anyone who attains even a trace of the Divine secret is permanently occupied with the eternal Presence (huzur-e javidan). In Sufism, true awareness of the Divine secret leads to huzur (presence of heart), which elevates the seeker above temporal concerns into an eternal, contemplative state with God.
The Torment of a Negligent Breath
Conversely, the poet warns of the gravity of spending even a single breath (dam) in forgetfulness of God:
- The Present: A single breath drawn without Divine consciousness is a profound loss in the immediate moment.
- The Future: This momentary negligence is transformed in the hereafter into a deep grief (gham) that acts as the hell of the soul (duzakh-e jan).
