The Ethical Duty of Speaking Truth to Power and Ruler Accountability in Sanai's Philosophy

In Section 6 of Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, Sanai outlines the ethical obligations of both rulers and counselors, emphasizing ruler accountability and the rejection of flattery:

  1. The Rejection of Flattery (Mudahena): Sanai warns rulers that courtly praise is driven by self-interest and holds no true value. A true counselor must speak the truth without compromise, avoiding deceptive flattery and vain desires.
  2. Strict Accountability of the Sovereign: Sanai asserts that a ruler is spiritually and morally responsible for the suffering of any single individual in the realm. He declares that a king cannot be excused if even one person or oppressed soul suffers under injustice.
  3. The Covenant of Justice: Sanai emphasizes that justice operates under strict, non-negotiable conditions. Failing to meet these conditions represents a fundamental breach of the covenant of leadership.
