In the opening section of the Chapter on Poverty (Bab al-Faqr) of the Kashf al-Mahjub, Hujwiri establishes the lofty spiritual rank of poverty (faqr, darvishi) in the path of God. He grounds this nobility in Quranic testimony: the restrained poor who are mistaken for the wealthy because of their dignified self-restraint (al-Baqara 273), the parable of the powerless owned servant (al-Nahl 75), and those whose sides forsake their beds to call upon their Lord in fear and hope (al-Sajda 16). He reinforces it with Prophetic tradition, noting that the Prophet chose poverty, praying to live and die as one of the poor (miskin) and to be raised among their company, and reporting that on the Day of Resurrection God draws near His beloved ones, identified as the poor of the believers (fuqara al-muslimin). The section frames poverty not as mere deprivation but as a station of divine nearness and honor, setting up the more technical discussions of faqr that follow.
