The Exploitation of Vanity and Social Status in the Gardener Allegory
In Rumi's allegory of the gardener and the three intruders, the gardener executes his 'divide and conquer' strategy by manipulating the intruders' pride and social hierarchies. To isolate the Sufi, the gardener flatters the Jurist (Faqih) and the Sharif, praising their scholarly intellect and noble lineage while belittling the Sufi's supposed simplicity. This manufactured arrogance causes the two to turn against their companion. On a spiritual level, this detail illustrates how the nafs (carnal soul) and demonic forces weaponize a seeker's vanity, self-righteousness, and social identity to destroy communal unity, rendering them isolated and vulnerable to spiritual ruin.
