The First Stage of Love as Self-Preservation in Jami's Haft Awrang

In Section 35 of Jami's Haft Awrang, the poet outlines the initial stage of love where the lover's focus remains on themselves. Jami argues that when a person seeks the beloved only for personal satisfaction, gain, or self-interest, this state is not genuine love but rather self-preservation (khwishtandari) and captivity to egotistical desires. He warns that wasting one's life on satisfying the base self prevents the soul from achieving the true spiritual transformation that genuine love demands.
