In Chapter 21, Poem 13 of Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the poet explores the complete helplessness and passivity of the lover in the face of divine love. The poem uses the metaphor of a 'speck of pure shadow' (ذره‌ای سایهٔ محض) being overwhelmed by the 'light of the sun' (پرتو آفتاب) to illustrate this spiritual state. Just as a shadow loses its form and power to act when exposed to the sun's intense light, the individual ego or 'ruined heart' (دلی خراب) becomes entirely powerless, selfless, and incapable of independent action when confronted with the overwhelming majesty and presence of the Divine.
