The Immaterial and Creative Nature of Divine Speech in Jami's Haft Awrang (Section 10)
In Section 10 of Silsilat al-Dhahab (from Jami's Haft Awrang), the poet outlines a theological understanding of Divine Speech (Kalam). Jami defines this speech as co-eternal and entirely immaterial, operating without physical organs such as the throat, tongue, or palate, and independent of letters and phrases. Crucially, Jami emphasizes the creative agency of this Divine Speech: God addresses non-existence, and out of sheer ecstasy and delight, non-existence is brought dancing into the space of physical existence. This illustrates the Islamic mystical view of creation as a direct response to the eternal divine call.
