The Impact of Altruism on Strategic Choices

Consider a scenario with two neighboring farmers who must independently decide whether to use a cheap, polluting pesticide or a more expensive, environmentally-friendly one. If both use the cheap pesticide, they get a moderate individual profit but suffer from high pollution. If one uses the cheap pesticide while the other uses the expensive one, the first farmer gets a very high profit (benefiting from the other's clean effort without paying for it), while the second gets a very low profit. If both use the expensive, clean method, they both get a good profit and enjoy a clean environment, an outcome that is better for both of them than if they both used the cheap pesticide.

Analyze how the introduction of strong, mutual altruistic preferences (where each farmer cares significantly about the well-being of the other) would alter the strategic decision-making process and the likely final outcome of this interaction. Explain why this change occurs.
