The Impact of COVID-19 on the Livestock Sector

  • Physical distancing and the need for PPE have reduced the efficiency of industrial feed enterprises.
  • Movement restrictions have resulted in labor shortages and reduced the supply of raw materials.
  • Food safety inspection and animal health extension services have been disrupted, as well as delivery of vaccines and medicine treating animal diseases that can prevent major livestock losses and outbreaks of diseases that could be transmissible to humans.
  • Closure of live animal markets in many countries means small-scale local producers cannot sell their goods. The drop in demand for livestock has reduced sales and lowered prices.
  • International transport of livestock and livestock products has been greatly reduced because of bans on exports in countries such as Poland, China, Laos, Myanmar. Thailand, and Vietnam.
