The Interdependence of Intellect and Revelation in Hadiqat al-Haqiqah
In Section 14 of the Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, Sana'i articulates the necessary synthesis of human intellect ('aql) and religious law or prophetic revelation (shar'). He famously employs the metaphor of sight: intellect is the perceiving eye, and prophethood is the illuminating light. Neither is sufficient on its own, as an eye without light cannot see, and light without a perceiving eye is purposeless. Therefore, Sana'i argues that true spiritual comprehension requires the reconciliation and combined function of both rational faculties and divine guidance.
