This concept captures the central moral of Jami's tale: the paradoxical inversion of عزت (dignity) and خواری (humiliation). The old thorn-picker (خارکش), bent under his bundle of thorns, plants a seed of gratitude with every painful step and thanks God for the crown of honor placed upon him, so that from the thorn of his outward humiliation he opens the rose of true dignity. The elegant, proud youth mocks this humble laborer, but his arrogance turns his inherited nobility into inner degradation, so that the rose of his dignity comes to smell of humiliation. The poem argues that genuine honor is earned through humility, contentment, and gratitude rather than through social rank, wealth, or youthful pride.
