The Just King as God's Vicegerent (Khalifa) in Jami's Haft Awrang
In Section 11 of the Haft Awrang, Jami articulates the political theology of just kingship by describing the ruler as God's vicegerent (khalifa) on earth. Drawing on the Quranic address to the prophet David, Jami argues that the divine purpose behind placing a king in power is the establishment of justice, the protection of the defenseless, and the deterrence of tyranny. He asserts that a ruler's legitimacy is entirely dependent on equitable governance; thus, any leader who fails to act with justice forfeits their divine mandate and status as God's representative.
