During the production of Gettysburg, Michael Shaara's son, Jeff Shaara, was approached about writing a prequel and sequel to The Killer Angels, which he eventually agreed to do. The prequel, Gods and Generals, was later also adapted into a movie. Unfortunately, this was not received as well as Gettysburg had been, leading to all plans to adapt the sequel, The Last Full Measure, being dropped. Jeff Shaara also wrote another prequel, Gone for Soldiers, about the Mexican War, featuring younger versions of many of the same characters.
