

During the production of _Gettysburg_, Michael Shaara's son, Jeff Shaara, was approached about writing a prequel and sequel to _The Killer Angels_, which he eventually agreed to do. The prequel, _Gods and Generals_, was later also adapted into a movie. Unfortunately, this was not received as well as _Gettysburg_ had been, leading to all plans to adapt the sequel, _The Last Full Measure_, being dropped. Jeff Shaara also wrote another prequel, _Gone for Soldiers_, about the Mexican War, featuring younger versions of many of the same characters.

_The Killer Angels_ subsequently became one of the inspirations for Ken Burns's documentary _The Civil War_, as well as being the inspiration for the film _Gettysburg_, which was directly based on it.

The Joss Whedon sci-fi/Western TV series _Firefly_, and its spin-off movie _Serenity_, were also inspired by _The Killer Angels_.
