In Book Four of the Masnavi, Rumi delineates the boundaries of the 'Particular Intellect' (Aql-e Juzwi), the human faculty of discursive reasoning and logic. He asserts that this earthly intellect is strictly confined to the physical world and 'sees no further than the grave.' It is inherently incapable of perceiving the unseen (ghayb) or grasping ultimate spiritual truths. Because of its blindness to the divine realm and the afterlife, Rumi insists that reliance on the Particular Intellect must be set aside in matters of the spirit. Instead, a seeker must become a follower and imitator (muqallid) of the prophets and saints, whose souls are illuminated by the transcendent 'Universal Intellect' (Aql-e Kull).
