The Metaphor of Jesus and His Donkey in Sana'i's Hadiqat

In Section 30 of the Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, Sana'i employs the metaphor of Jesus and his donkey to represent the relationship between the soul and the body. Jesus symbolizes the divine soul, while the donkey represents the physical body. Sana'i criticizes individuals who starve their spiritual self (leaving Jesus hungry) while overfeeding and pampering their physical form (the donkey). This metaphor highlights that prioritizing physical desires over spiritual development leads to the degradation of the soul.
