The Metaphor of the Beloved's Mouth and Divine Ineffability in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 38, Poem 12)
In Poem 12 of Chapter 38 in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the metaphor of the beloved's mouth (دهان) is used to illustrate the profound ineffability of the Divine. The poem contrasts the universal desire to speak of the Divine with the ultimate impossibility of doing so, stating that "no word can ever fit within it" (سخنی درو نگنجد هرگز). This imagery emphasizes the inadequacy of human language, intellect, and physical metaphors to capture or contain the limitless and transcendent nature of God. The motif of the infinitely narrow or subtle mouth is a recurring theme throughout this chapter of the collection.
