Concept
The Metaphor of the Bird Messenger and the Pain of Separation in Section 27 of the Khosrow Nameh
In Section 27 of the Khosrow Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar depicts Gol writing a letter to Khosrow during their painful separation. The passage begins with Gol addressing a green-clad pheasant (tadhrav) to serve as her messenger, continuing Attar's frequent use of avian metaphors. She describes love as a path of absolute sacrifice, where the only guide is the heart's blood (khun-e del), and a true lover must be completely submerged in suffering from the very first step, metaphorically drowned in blood like a red rose.
