The Metaphor of the Evil Face and the Forelock in the Masnavi

In Book 3 of the Masnavi, Rumi uses the villager's concealment of his face from his guests as a metaphor for spiritual deformity and hypocrisy. When the villager hides his face to avoid offering hospitality, Rumi describes such a face as being entirely filled with deceit and evil, infested by devils like flies. To emphasize the severity of this spiritual malice, Rumi references the Quranic verse 96:15 ('We will drag him by the forelock'), illustrating that the outward evasion of hospitality reflects an inward rebellion against divine grace and moral responsibility.
