The Negotiation Boundary

A skilled artisan can either work for a large company or be self-employed. Being self-employed provides a certain combination of daily income and free time, which represents their next best alternative to taking the company job. The company is preparing to make a job offer, which will also consist of a certain daily income and amount of free time.

Analyze the role of the artisan's self-employment situation in their decision-making process. In your response, explain how this alternative establishes a minimum threshold for any acceptable job offer from the company. Describe the collection of all potential job offers (combinations of income and free time) that would leave the artisan feeling neither better nor worse off than if they remained self-employed. How does this collection of offers function as a critical boundary in the negotiation?
