In Chapter 6, Poem 51 of Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the poet contrasts the 'ocean of existence' (Divine Reality or Absolute Being) with the 'well of temporal existence' (the contingent, worldly life). The poem illustrates the concept of Fana (annihilation of the self). The seeker struggles within the narrow confines of temporal existence, but when the overwhelming reality of the Divine 'ocean' manifests, its waves completely sweep away the seeker's individual, temporal identity.
