Essay

The Pace of Progress and Economic Outcomes

Imagine two pre-industrial societies, A and B. Both operate under conditions where any increase in average income leads to population growth, which in turn tends to reduce average income back to a subsistence level. Society A experiences slow, incremental technological improvements over several centuries. Society B, after a long period of stagnation, undergoes a period of very rapid and compounding technological breakthroughs. Analyze and compare the likely long-term outcomes for the average living standards in both societies. In your analysis, explain the critical role that the pace of technological change plays in determining whether a society can achieve a sustained increase in prosperity.
