In Section 5 of Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, Sanai presents a classic Sufi paradox regarding asceticism (zuhd) through a dialogue between the Abbasid Caliph Al-Ma'mun and a renowned ascetic. When Al-Ma'mun praises the ascetic's renunciation, the ascetic rejects the label, arguing that the Caliph is the true zahid (renouncer). The reasoning is based on scale: the ascetic merely renounced the transient, valueless world in exchange for the eternal Hereafter, whereas the Caliph renounced the eternal Hereafter for a fleeting earthly kingdom. This concept highlights the absolute superiority of the Hereafter and redefines true renunciation as a rational choice rather than a sacrifice.
