The Paradox of Work and Leisure in the 20th Century

Throughout the 20th century, many industrialized nations saw a significant rise in real wages. Paradoxically, instead of working more to take advantage of higher pay, the average worker chose to work fewer hours. Using an economic model of individual choice, analyze the two conflicting incentives a worker faces when their wage increases, and explain how the observed historical trend can be the result of one of these incentives overpowering the other.
