The Premonition of Death and the Illusory Comfort in Section 69 of the Khosrow Nameh
In Section 69 of the Khosrow Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar depicts the transition from a state of supreme happiness, peace, and prosperity in Khosrow's later years to an atmosphere of impending tragedy. Despite having lived a long life full of music, wine, and hunting with his beloved Gol without any decline in his perfection, Khosrow is suddenly shaken by a terrifying dream (khab-e sahmgin) that causes him to tremble like a willow. In an attempt to ward off this dark premonition of bad fortune (bad-e tadbir), he organizes a grand royal hunt, accompanied by his companions, relatives, and elite riders. This narrative turn emphasizes the transience of worldly pleasure and the inevitability of destiny, highlighting the Sufi theme that earthly security is ultimately fragile and cannot withstand the onset of mortality.
