فرو بستند در قیدی به زورش
گروهی پیش او رفتند ناگاه 
به نظاره باستادند در راه
به ایشان گفت شبلی سخن ساز 
که چه قومید ؟ بر گویید هین راز
همه گفتند خیل دوستانیم 
که ره جز دوستی تو ندانیم
چو بشنید این سخن شبلی ز یاران 
بر ایشان کرد حالی سنگ باران
همه یاران او چون سنگ دیدند 
ز بیم سنگ از پیشش رمیدند
زبان بگشاد شبلی گفت آنگاه 
که ای جمله به هم کذاب و گمراه
چو لاف از دوستی تان بود با من 
نبودید ای خسیسان پاک دامن
که بگریزد ز زخم دوست آخر ؟ 
که زخم او نه، رحم اوست آخر
چو زخم دوست دید ابلیس نگریخت 
ولی از زخم او صد مرهم آمیخت
به جان بپذیر هر زخمی که او زد 
که گر او زخم بر جان زد نکو زد
اگر یک ذره عشق آمد پدیدار 
به صد جان زخم را گردی خریدار
تو پنداری که زخمش رایگان است 
هزاران ساله طاعت نرخ آن است
هزاران ساله گرچه طاعتش بود 
بهای لعنت یک ساعتش بود
قوی شایسته باشی در خدایی 
اگر گویند تو ما را نشایی
عزیزا قصهٔ ابلیس بشنو 
زمانی ترک کن ، تلبیس بشنو
گر این مردی ترا بودی زمانی 
ز تو زنده شدی هر دم جهانی
اگرچه رانده و ملعون راه ست 
همیشه در حضور پادشاه ست
چه لعنت می کنی او را شب و روز 
ازو باری مسلمانی درآموز

## English translation
When Shibli's spiritual ecstasy grew intense,
They bound him in chains by force.
A group of people suddenly went to him,
And stood in the path to watch him.
Shibli spoke to them, saying:
'What people are you? Tell me this secret!'
They all said: 'We are the crowd of your friends,
For we know no path but friendship with you.'
When Shibli heard this talk from the friends,
He immediately rained stones upon them.
When all his friends saw the stones,
They fled from before him out of fear of the stones.
Shibli then spoke and said:
'O you who are all liars and astray!
Since you boasted of your friendship with me,
You were not sincere, O wretched ones.
For who indeed flees from the wound of a friend?
For his wound is not a wound, but his mercy in the end.
When Iblis saw the Beloved's wound, he did not flee,
But rather mixed a hundred salves from His wound.
Accept with your soul every wound He inflicts,
For if He strikes a wound upon the soul, He strikes it well.
If a single atom of love appears,
You would purchase the wound with a hundred lives.
Do you think His wound is free?
Thousands of years of devotion is its price.
Although he had thousands of years of devotion,
It was the price of His curse for a single hour.
You would be truly worthy of the Divine
If they say: 'You are not fit for us.'
O dear one, listen to the story of Iblis,
Leave aside deception for a moment, and listen.
If you possessed this courage for a moment,
A world would be brought to life by you at every instant.
Although he is banished and cursed on the path,
He is always in the presence of the King.
Why do you curse him night and day?
Learn true submission from him at least!'

شبلی را - قدس الله تعالی سره - شوری افتاد، به بیمارستان بردند جمعی به نظاره وی رفتند پرسید که شما کیانید؟ گفتند: دوستان تو سنگ برداشت و بر ایشان حمله کرد جمله بگریختند بخندید گفت: بازآیید ای مدعیان که دوستان از دوستان نگریزند و از سنگ جفایشان نپرهیزند. 
آن است دوستدار که هر چند دشمنی
بیند ز دوست بیش، شود دوستدارتر 
بر سر هزار سنگ ستم گر خورد ازو
گردد بنای عشقش ازان استوارتر 
و هم از وی آرند که وقتی بیمار شد، خلیفه طبیب ترسا به معالجت وی فرستاد از وی پرسید که خاطر تو چه می خواهد؟ گفت: آنکه تو مسلمان شوی گفت: اگر من مسلمان شوم تو نیک می شوی و از بستر بیماری برمی خیزی؟ گفت: آری!
پس ایمان بر وی عرضه کرد و وی ایمان آورد و شبلی از بستر برخاست و بر وی از بیماری اثری نه پس هر دو همراه پیش خلیفه رفتند و قصه را باز گفتند خلیفه گفت: پنداشتم که طبیب پیش بیمار فرستاده ام من خود بیمار پیش طبیب فرستاده بوده ام. 
هر کس که از هجوم محبت مریض شد
داند طبیب خویش لقای حبیب را 
چون بر سرش طبیب بهشتی نهد قدم
بخشد شفا ز علت هستی طبیب را

## English translation
Shibli — may God the Exalted sanctify his secret — was seized by a spiritual ecstasy, and they took him to the madhouse. A group went to gaze upon him. He asked, 'Who are you?' They said, 'Your friends.' He picked up a stone and rushed at them, and they all fled. He laughed and said, 'Come back, O pretenders! For friends do not flee from friends, nor do they shy away from the stone of their affliction.'

That one is a true lover who, however much enmity
He sees from the Beloved, grows all the more loving;
Though he receive upon his head a thousand stones of cruelty from Him,
The foundation of his love grows only firmer thereby.

And they also relate of him that once he fell ill, and the caliph sent a Christian physician to treat him. The physician asked him, 'What does your heart desire?' He said, 'That you become a Muslim.' He said, 'If I become a Muslim, will you grow well and rise from your sickbed?' He said, 'Yes!'

Then he presented the faith to him, and the physician embraced faith, and Shibli rose from his bed with no trace of illness left upon him. Then the two went together before the caliph and recounted the tale. The caliph said, 'I thought I had sent a physician to a sick man; in truth I had sent a sick man to a physician.'

Whoever has fallen sick from the onslaught of love
Knows the meeting with the Beloved to be his physician;
When the heavenly physician sets foot at his bedside,
He bestows healing from the very malady of existence.
