The Rationale for Tangency in Consumption Choice

When an individual chooses between consumption in the present and consumption in the future, their optimal plan is found where their indifference curve is tangent to their budget constraint. Explain in economic terms why a point where the indifference curve intersects (crosses) the budget constraint cannot be the optimal choice.
