The Role of Self-Interest and Specialization in Market Cooperation

In a market system, large-scale cooperation is driven by self-interest rather than direct concern for others. Producers, motivated by profit, specialize in making goods or services more efficiently than consumers could themselves. A consumer's payment for a product creates a mutually beneficial exchange, which in turn enables the producer to purchase necessary goods from other specialists. This process creates a complex, cooperative network among countless individuals who are strangers to one another.
