The Role of the 1845 Poor Wheat Harvest in the 1848 European Revolutions

While long-term socioeconomic factors and radical ideologies are often identified as the primary causes of the 1848 European revolutions, the poor wheat harvest of 1845 may have been a significant contributing factor. The harvest failure resulted in extensive food shortages and steep price hikes, which in turn caused economic distress that likely fueled the ensuing political upheavals. The connection between economic crises and these revolutions is examined in a study by Helge Berger and Mark Spoerer published in 'The Journal of Economic History' (2001).
