رخ خورشید رخشان نازده تیغ

پگاهی با سپاهی چند یکسر 
رسید آنجا که خسرو بود قیصر
چو قیصر دید خسرو را ز دوری 
بدو نزدیک شد چون ناصبوری
گرفتش در بر و اشکش روان گشت

که بسیاری بجستم در جهانت
ز که پرسم ندانم راه کویت 
که در کوی اوفتادم زارزویت
اگر عشق تو جان من نبودی 
بعالم در، نشان من نبودی
شکار شیر عشقت جز جگر نیست 
تو گویی در تنم جانی دگر نیست
چو شیری کو بگیرد گور در راه 
بدندان درنیارد جز جگرگاه
جگر چون خورد، ره گیرد ز سرباز 
بروباهان گذارد آن دگر باز
درین ره عشق تو چون شیر بیشه 
نداند جز جگر خوردن همیشه
ز خود یکبارگی دستم فرو بست 
اگر دستم نگیری رفتم از دست
دلم در داغ نومیدی کشیدی 
ز بیخم کندی و شاخم بریدی
سرم بر خاک و رویم بر زمینست 
ز دردم فارغی دردم ازینست
ترا دارم ز ملک این جهانی 
تو خود چون جان ز چشم من نهانی
چو جان پنهان شدی چون جویمت من 
مگر کز پرده بیرون جویمت من
دو اسبه دل دوان شد در خیالت 
نیافت از هیچ ره گرد وصالت
نشستم مدتی در بند پندار 
نیامد راست با پندار من کار
خطا بود آنچ میپنداشتم من 
کنون زین کار، دل برداشتم من
چه میگویم که تا جانم رفیقست 
ز جانانم نشان جستن طریقست
چو گفت این راز بی صبری بسی کرد 
ز هر سویی خبر پرسان کسی کرد
نه از فیروز و نه ازگل خبر بود 
ازین غم هر زمان حالش بتر بود
چوبودش یک نفس صد باره تیمار 
بآخر گشت آن بیچاره بیمار
نه دارو سودمند آمد نه جلاب 
علاجش بود گل، گل غرقه در آب
پدر میداد پندش شام و شبگیر 
که خوش باش ای جوان و جام می گیر
جوانی داری و اسباب شاهی 
مکش جور و بکن چیزی که خواهی
مباش ایمن ازین گردنده پرگار 
دمیست این عمر ازین دم بهره بردار
خوشی امروز می خور تا توانی 
که فردا را کسی نکند ضمانی
درین دم همدمی دیگر گزین تو 
کجا درمانی از یک همنشین تو
ترا هرجا که ماهی زیر پردهست 
اگر رغبت نمایی عقد کردهست
کم گل گیر اگر گل ریخت از بار 
که گر گل هست خالی نیست از خار
ترا چندانکه گل در ملک رومست 
ز طاعت نرمتر، گردن ز مومست
زجایی دلبری کن اختیاری 
ز گل تا کی زنی در دیده خاری
اگر خواهی، دو صد شاه کله دار 
دراندازد بدامادیت دستار
نشستی در غم یک پای موزه 
که گفتت جز بگل نگشای روزه
ترا صد ماه جان افروز باید 
اگر نبود گلی خود روی، شاید
اگر گل شد ترا، صد نوبهارست 
که در هر یک، هزاران گل ببارست
اگر گل شد، جهانی پر شکر هست 
جهانی بیش میخواهی وگر، هست
تو تا بودی ز گل آواره بودی 
گهی بر خار و گه برخاره بودی
زمانی سنگ صحرا میشمردی 
زمانی کوه و دریا میسپردی
زمانی پای در گل میفتادی 
زمانی دست بر دل مینهادی
زماانی زهر زاری میچشیدی 
زمانی درد و خواری میکشیدی
تو خود اندیشه کن با این همه بار 
گلی میارزدت با این همه خار؟
تو چون کشتی خوشی خود را ببازی 
اگر گل باشد وگرنه، چه سازی؟
چو تو مردی چه گل باشد چه خارت 
که گل در زندگی آید بکارت
که میداند که گل مردهست یا نه 
جهان بیتو بسر بردهست یا نه
تو چندی در عزای او نشستی 
بمحنت در بلای او نشستی
بمردهست او، اگر او زنده بودی 
بدین غم کاشکی ارزنده بودی
ز گل بیگانگی جوی و جدایی 
کسی با مرده کی کرد آشنایی
شد ازگفت پدر چون زر، رخ او 
فرو بست از خجالت پاسخ او
بر آن بنشست تا این چرخ مینا 
چه بازی آردش از پرده پیدا
قدرچه بند و تقدیرش کند باز 
قضا از سر چه تدبیرش کند ساز
هر آنکس کز مراد خود جدا شد 
فدای زخم چوگان قضا شد
همه در بیم و سرگردان بمانده 
که چون گوییم درچوگان بمانده

When Caesar received news of King Khosrow,
He prepared to welcome Khosrow.
Caesar quickly prepared the road,
And sent a horse and robe of honor back to the king.
Before the radiant sun's face could strike its sword,
The blood-stained morning rose from the clouds.
Early in the morning, with a complete army,
Caesar arrived where Khosrow was.
When Caesar saw Khosrow from afar,
He approached him impatiently.
He took him in his embrace and his tears flowed,
For indeed, without the beloved, he had suffered greatly.
He said to him: 'My heart burned like liver,
Your separation, O son, burned your father's soul.'
'Much grief chastised my Khosrow,
Thank God, it has now given me a new life.'
'Do not ask me how it was without you,
For if there was a heart, it was in a sea of blood.'
'I pulled the foot of my heart into the skirt of pain,
I placed the eye of my soul on the window of pain.'
'Now a houri has emerged from my skirt,
Now a light has come forth from my window.'
'Thank God that I saw your face again,
You reached me, and I reached you again.'
When they had read a bit of the tale of suffering,
They mounted and rode from there.
Scattering sugar, they set off in joy,
In gratitude, they adorned the city for the king.
By the hands of the silver-scatterers since early morning,
The face of the earth became like a fish's back.
What a feast it was, a paradise filled with houris,
All houris like the moon, and the moon full of light.
What a festival it was, a festival full of excitement,
All pleasure, music, and drink upon drink.
What an assembly it was, a garden full of flowers,
The entire garden a sun and the cup full of wine.
At every moment they drank more sweet cups,
They brought forward a hundred glasses of strong wine.
Even though the world was happy with Khosrow,
He was not happy at all for a single moment.
Separation from Gol kept his heart in pain,
The lion of grief held his heart in its claws.
From separation, fire rose to his head,
And he was drowned in the water of his eyes at every moment.
He had traveled all the world like a ball,
Yet from the world he had not smelled a single fragrance of his own.
He lamented, 'O Gol, what should I do
To pull your thorn out of my heart?'
'Since you are lost, from whom should I seek your sign?
For I searched for you much in your world.'
'Whom should I ask? I do not know the way to your street,
For I fell into the street out of desire for you.'
'If your love were not my soul,
There would be no sign of me in the world.'
'The prey of the lion of your love is nothing but the liver,
It is as if there is no other soul in my body.'
'Like a lion that catches a wild ass on the way,
And takes nothing in its teeth but the liver-spot.'
'Once it eats the liver, it takes its path again
And leaves the rest to the foxes.'
'In this path, your love is like the lion of the forest,
It knows nothing but to eat liver always.'
'It bound my hands completely from myself;
If you do not take my hand, I am lost.'
'You dragged my heart into the brand of despair,
You uprooted me and cut my branches.'
'My head is on the dust and my face is on the ground,
You are free of my pain, and this is my pain.'
'I have you out of all the kingdom of this world,
Yet you, like the soul, are hidden from my eyes.'
'Since you became hidden like the soul, how shall I seek you?
Unless I seek you outside the veil.'
'With two horses, my heart galloped in your thoughts,
But it did not find the dust of your union by any path.'
'I sat for a time in the bond of imagination,
But my affairs did not turn out right with my imagination.'
'What I imagined was an error,
Now I have given up hope on this matter.'
'What am I saying? As long as my soul is my companion,
Seeking a sign of the beloved is the path.'
When he spoke this secret, he showed much impatience,
And asked everyone from every direction for news.
There was news neither of Firuz nor of Gol,
And from this grief, his state grew worse at every moment.
Since he had a hundred sorrows in a single breath,
At last that helpless one became ill.
Neither medicine was useful, nor rosewater,
His cure was Gol, and Gol was drowned in water.
His father gave him advice evening and morning:
'Be happy, O youth, and take the cup of wine.'
'You have youth and the means of kingship,
Do not suffer, and do what you wish.'
'Do not feel secure from this revolving compass,
This life is but a moment, take benefit from this moment.'
'Drink happily today as much as you can,
For no one guarantees tomorrow.'
'In this moment, choose another companion,
How can you remain stuck on one companion?'
'Wherever there is a beautiful maiden under the veil for you,
If you show inclination, she is wedded to you.'
'Think less of the rose if the rose shed its load,
For if there is a rose, it is not free of thorns.'
'As long as you have roses in the kingdom of Rome,
They are more compliant in obedience, and their necks softer than wax.'
'Choose a sweetheart from somewhere,
How long will you prick a thorn in your eye for the rose?'
'If you wish, two hundred crowned kings
Will throw their turbans to have you as a son-in-law.'
'You sit in grief over a single shoe;
Who told you not to break your fast except with the rose?'
'You need a hundred soul-kindling moons;
If there is no self-growing rose, so be it.'
'If the rose is gone, you have a hundred new springs,
In each of which thousands of roses are in bloom.'
'If the rose is gone, the world is full of sugar;
If you want a larger world, it is there.'
'As long as you existed, you were a wanderer for Gol,
Sometimes on thorns, sometimes on stone.'
'At times you counted the stones of the desert,
At times you traversed mountains and seas.'
'At times your foot fell in the mud,
At times you placed your hand on your heart.'
'At times you tasted the poison of lamentation,
At times you suffered pain and abasement.'
'Reflect on this yourself, with all this burden,
Is a rose worth it to you with all these thorns?'
'Why do you play away your own happiness?
Whether there is Gol or not, how will you manage?'
'For a man like you, what difference does Gol or thorn make?
For the rose only comes in handy during life.'
'Who knows whether Gol is dead or not,
And whether she has ended her life without you or not?'
'You sat in mourning for her for a time,
You sat in the calamity of her suffering.'
'She is dead; and even if she were alive,
I wish she were worth all this grief.'
'Seek estrangement and separation from Gol,
Who ever made acquaintance with the dead?'
His face became like gold from his father's words,
And out of shame, his reply was closed.
He sat waiting to see what game this crystal sphere
Would reveal to him from behind the curtain.
What knot destiny would tie and what decree would untie it,
And what plan fate would prepare for him anew.
Whoever is separated from their desire
Becomes a victim to the blow of the mallet of fate.
All remained in fear and bewildered,
Like a ball left in the mallet's path.
