In the Conference of the Birds (Manteq al-Tayr), Farid al-Din al-Attar uses the narrative of a Muslim warrior (Ghazi) and an unbeliever who grant each other a truce for prayer to emphasize the supreme importance of honoring covenants. When the Ghazi attempts to break his promise and attack the praying unbeliever, a divine voice rebukes him, pointing out the irony that the unbeliever is faithful to a false idol while the Ghazi is treacherous in a true covenant. This illustrates the Sufi ethical principle that keeping one's word is a fundamental moral obligation, and treachery, even against an enemy, is a grave spiritual offense.
