Essay

The Shape of Intertemporal Preferences

Explain why an individual's preference for a balanced consumption pattern over time (e.g., consuming a moderate amount today and a moderate amount in the future, rather than an extreme amount today and very little in the future) results in indifference curves for present and future consumption that are 'bowed-in' toward the origin. In your explanation, describe how the individual's willingness to trade future consumption for an additional unit of present consumption changes as their present consumption increases.
