In Chapter 6, Poem 9 of Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the relationship between the individual soul and the Divine is depicted through the metaphor of a drop and the ocean. The drop (the soul) drinks from the infinite divine ocean and becomes hidden (attaining Fana, or annihilation). By drawing breath only with the 'Friend' (God), the soul transcends its limitations, paradoxically consuming and encompassing both the material and spiritual worlds in its unified state.
