The Specific Effects on Cancer Care During COVID-19 from a Radiological Perspective

  • During the COVID-19 era, both cancer diagnosis and treatment must undergo a large shift as a large part of the cancer process revolves around patient interaction directly with a physician
  • Due to this, there has now been an uptick in radiology usage to treat more invasive cancers that would have before required intimate surgeries
  • The more widespread adoption and use of Hypofractionation, the use of more potent treatments over a shorter period of time, must also me adopted as it will allow for shorter recovery time and lower the high-risk window which most cancer patients have
  • The paper addresses the shortcomings of telehealth in the cancer treatment journey as prior to COVID-19 many telehealth consultations were only really used for a second opinion with a physician that may be further away, this primary usage has not entirely changed as it is impossible to perform tasks like radiological imaging through a telehealth visit and patients must physically go to a hospital to receive some forms of treatment
