The Spiritual Value of Loss and Involuntary Hardship (Riyazat) in the Masnavi
In Book Three, Section 163 of the Masnavi, Rumi explores the concept that worldly losses—whether of wealth or the physical body—ultimately serve as gains for the soul. He asserts that material loss saves the soul from spiritual punishment (wabal). Rumi advises the seeker to willingly embrace spiritual discipline and austerity (riyazat), as dedicating the body to service elevates the soul. Furthermore, if hardships or suffering come involuntarily, the believer should submit and offer gratitude, recognizing them as a divine grace intended for their ultimate spiritual purification and benefit.
