In Poem 66 of Chapter 29 of Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the concept of the spiritual veil (hijaab) is closely linked to divine reproach and accountability. The verses suggest that as long as the seeker remains behind the veil of selfhood and personal desires (metaphorically described as keeping one's 'foot in the stirrup'), they will continue to face spiritual trials and have their passions called to account. True spiritual union requires relinquishing the ego to overcome this state of separation.
