In the prologue of the Elahi Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar invokes the classical Sufi and Islamic theological concept of Jaff al-Qalam (the Pen has dried). Originating from the prophetic tradition stating that the Pen has dried with what shall be, this concept asserts that the ultimate destiny of all creation, actions, and spiritual states is eternally predetermined by the Divine Will. Attar applies this metaphysically to his own creative process, stating that both the inspiration and the ultimate completion of his work are already inscribed within God's eternal pen ('بلی جف القلم در خامهٔ تست'). By doing so, Attar surrenders his agency, highlighting that any spiritual eloquence or success (tawfiq) in his poetry is entirely a manifestation of preordained divine grace rather than human effort.
