The Terrors of Death and the Afterlife in Attar's Fifteenth Discourse
In Section 1 of the Fifteenth Discourse of the Asrar Nameh, Attar of Nishapur vividly illustrates the inescapable terrors of death and the eschatological journey. Opening with a slightly ironic tone regarding worldly provisions, the poem quickly transitions to the grim realities of the narrow grave, the perilous Sirat bridge, and the overwhelming sorrow of Resurrection Day (Qiyamat). A central theme of the passage is the absolute finality and mystery of this journey; Attar emphasizes that every human being must traverse this dark, terrifying valley, yet no one has ever returned to reveal its secrets or provide news of the departed.
