The Theme of Human Helplessness (Ajz) and Divine Assistance in Sana'i's Supplications

In Persian Sufi literature, particularly in Sana'i's Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, supplication (munajat) is grounded in the concept of ajz (utter human helplessness) and reliance on divine grace. The seeker acknowledges that human efforts and deeds are inherently flawed and that any righteous action or spiritual correction must be enabled by God ('تو کنی فعل من نکو در من'). Consequently, the seeker pleads for divine hand-holding (دستگیری) and mercy rather than relying on personal merit or strength.
