The Theology of Eternal Punishment, Purgation, and Intercession in Jami's Haft Awrang (Section 29)

In Section 29 of Silsilat al-Dhahab (from the Haft Awrang), Jami outlines classical Islamic eschatological doctrines regarding salvation, eternal damnation, and intercession:

  1. Eternity of Hell for Disbelievers: Disbelievers (kuffar) are sentenced to eternal residence in the Hellfire (nar).
  2. Proportional Punishment for Believers: Sinning believers who have strayed undergo temporary purgatorial suffering in Hell in proportion to their specific transgressions.
  3. The Role of Intercession (Shafa'at): Believers can be delivered from Hell early through the intercession of prophets or saints.
  4. The Ultimate Divine Mercy: If no intercessor opens the door, the divine attribute of Mercy (Arham ar-Rahimin) ultimately pardons and delivers them.

This theological stance reflects mainstream Sunni eschatology, emphasizing both justice (proportional punishment) and divine grace (intercession and ultimate forgiveness).
