Short Answer

The Trading Problem in a Simple Economy

In a small community, a baker who only produces bread wants to acquire fish from a fisher. The fisher, however, does not want bread but desires a new chair from the carpenter. The carpenter, in turn, does not need a chair but wants to buy bread from the baker. Explain the primary obstacle preventing these direct trades from occurring. Then, describe how the introduction of a widely accepted, storable good (like bags of salt) could solve this problem for all three individuals.
