In Chapter 44, Poem 17 of Mokhtar Nameh, Attar contrasts formal asceticism (زهد) with the path of the Qalandar. He argues that asceticism can lead to spiritual vanity (عجب), extinguishing the genuine 'burning and melting' (سوز و گداز) of spiritual yearning. The Qalandar, as a rogue mystic, disrupts conventional piety and formal prayer to preserve raw, authentic devotion over superficial rule-following.
