The Veil of Religion and Divine Presence in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 19, Poem 9)
In Chapter 19, Poem 9 of Mokhtar Nameh, Attar explores the concept that formal religion can act as a veil (پردهٔ دین) that separates the soul from direct, unmediated intimacy with the Divine (the Friend). The poem emphasizes the absolute necessity of spiritual mindfulness or 'presence' (حضور). Attar warns that any breath taken without divine awareness is a wasted moment that will result in spiritual anguish or a 'fiery brand' (داغ آتشین) in the hereafter. This highlights the urgency of moving beyond formal structures to achieve constant, inner communion with God.
