The Virtue of Forgiveness as the Expression of Power and Justice in Sanai's Hadiqat

In Section 9 of Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, Sanai outlines the ethical and spiritual dimension of forgiveness ('afw) in relation to political power and victory:

  1. Forgiveness as the Foundation of Faith: Sanai describes forgiveness as the very root of religiousness ('asl-e dindari'), elevating it above mere compliance with rules.
  2. Gratitude for Power ('Shukr-e Qodrat'): Rather than celebrating victory through retribution or the display of force, the ruler is instructed that the true way to show gratitude for God-given power and victory ('shukr-e qodrat') is by accepting the excuses of the wrongdoers and granting forgiveness.
  3. The Balance of Knowledge ('Ilm') and Forbearance ('Hilm'): A just leader must balance knowledge of a crime with forbearance, using wisdom to bear the burden of the captives' offenses rather than reacting with immediate punishment.
