Theories of Stress

Psychological and physiological research has produced several prominent theories to explain the nature, causes, and mechanisms of stress. These include physiological models focusing on bodily responses (such as Walter Cannon's fight-or-flight response and Hans Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome), cognitive-mediational models emphasizing appraisal and coping (such as Lazarus and Folkman's transactional model), and evolutionary or social theories (such as the tend-and-befriend model).
