Third-wave CBT utilization of attention

Shifting focus from the content of thought to the process of thinking (cognitive defusion) represents an attentional shift within the cognitive domain. This shift in focus applies directly to third-wave cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) processes of change in affect, sense of self, and motivation. Various mindfulness-based practices—such as contemplative exercises, deliberate training in attentional control, guided imagery, shifting or sustaining attention, and broadening or narrowing focus—serve as training methods that facilitate greater attentional control.
