The Abled Disabled was coined by Tanya Titchkosky to discuss how the political formulation of disability as a problem both works to exclude disabled people while manufacturing a few disabled people as the "abled disabled" who are meant to provide inspiration to non-disabled and disabled people. The abled disabled are defined by not just seeking the betterment of themselves and other, working against all odds to 'overcome' their disability but also becoming more successful at doing 'normal things' after becoming disabled.

The Super Crip is summarized by Amit Kama as the stereotype of the disabled person who through sheer willpower overcomes their disability, the supercrip individualizes disability and invisibalizes societal discrimination and inaccessibility. Additionally Kama offers a distinction between the 'regular' supercrip where disabled people are overly celebrated for accomplishment mundane asks because the accomplishment of those taks is seen as 'overcoming' their disability and the glorified supercrip where disabled people perform highly extraodinary tasks - climbing a mountain, winning a nobel prize, etc. The existence of supercrips lead to stigmatization of other disabled people who are seen as not putting in enough effort to overcome their disability, while also flattening and providing often incorrect accountings of how disabled people accomplished certain things.

SuperCrip

While Price does not discuss the stereotypes of the Abled Disabled and the SuperCrip, it feels important to note that Priya was put into a role, based on her unsustainable success in graduate school of being assumed she would be able to navigate professorship similarly because of the stereotypes of the Abled Disabled and the SuperCrip.

University of Wisconsin - Madison

Priya, a faculty member with endometriosis reflected on how academic time often was tied with ideas of individuality, for instance Priya completed her doctorate degree within three years, which she reflected was not a sustainable pace, because she learned to accommodate her pain by overworking herself on the weeks she was not in pain. When she became a faculty member she was told that she didn't need to explain her disability because 'her record would speak for itself' despite the fact that she was probably going to have to go on medical leave. Priya ended up taking medical leave and when she came back she applied for a 're-entry grant' from the university she was teaching at, but that grant required that she ceased doing all academic work for a year despite the fact that it was not possible for Priya to cease all academic work because she was on multiple multi-year grants where her stopping would require the entire grant team to stop work on their study. For Priya academic time was compose of not only the present issues with the re-entry grant but also her past experiences in graduate school and the future - the future years of the grants. Priya was also simultaneously told by mentors to create two and four year plans without any discussion of how the unsteadiness of her disability made those plans futile.
