Case Study

Trade-offs in a Student's Schedule

Consider a student who derives satisfaction from two 'goods': hours of leisure time and points on their final exam grade. In Scenario A, the student has studied very little, has an expected grade of 65, and has abundant leisure time. In Scenario B, the student has studied extensively, has an expected grade of 95, but has very little leisure time remaining. In which scenario would the student be willing to give up a larger amount of leisure time to gain one additional point on their exam? Justify your answer by explaining the relationship between the value the student places on each good and its relative availability in each scenario.
