Activity (Process)

Translating a Word Problem into an Equation

To translate an everyday situation or word problem into an algebraic equation, follow a systematic process starting with comprehension:

  1. Read the problem: Ensure all the words and ideas are understood to determine what the problem is about.
  2. Restate the problem: Summarize the core question of the problem in just one clear sentence.
  3. Assign a variable: Choose a letter to represent the unknown quantity being sought. It is helpful to select a letter that serves as a reminder of the specific quantity (e.g., using qq for the number of quarters in a coin problem).
  4. Translate into an equation: Convert the single restated sentence into an algebraic equation.

Once the equation is constructed, it can be solved using mathematical techniques to find the answer to the original real-life question.
