Activity (Process)

Translating English Sentences into Equations

Translating a sentence into an algebraic equation involves a systematic three-step process. First, locate the "equals" word or words in the sentence and translate them into an equals sign (==). Second, translate the words to the left of the "equals" word(s) into an algebraic expression. Finally, translate the words to the right of the "equals" word(s) into an algebraic expression. Identifying the equality first provides the structure needed to correctly place the expressions on either side of the equation.
